Vlassis D. Tomaras

Vlassis D. Tomaras was born in Athens in 1948. He is a widower, father of two children and grandfather. He graduated from the Varvakeio Model School in 1966 and the Medical School of the University of Athens in 1972. He received the title of neurologist-psychiatrist in 1979 and the doctorate from the University of Athens in 1987.

He received further training with a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation at the Maudsley University Hospital, where he received a diploma in Family and Marital therapy from the Institute of Psychiatry/University of London (1987).

He was a member of the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Athens/Aeginiteio Hospital, where he worked as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry until 2009. In October 2009, he resigned. During the three years 2006-2009, he directed the University Child Psychiatric Clinic at the “Agia Sophia” Children’s General Hospital. He founded (in collaboration with V. Pomini) the Family Psychotherapy Unit at Aeginiteio Hospital, where, among other things, he has been training (in collaboration with the University Research Institute of Mental Health – EPIPSY) a number of mental health scientists. He has served as president of the Special Committee for the Control of the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Mental Disorders of Law 2716/1999 (2005-2009 and 2011-2015). He has served as president of the Psychotherapy Section of the Hellenic Psychiatric Society, as well as a member of the Mental Health Committee of the Central Health Council and the National Council of Medical Ethics and Deontology. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Research and Intervention in the Family Section of the World Psychiatric Society. Since December 2009, he has been an unpaid consultant to the 1st Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Athens/Aeginiteio Hospital. His written work consists of more than 100 complete Greek and foreign-language scientific publications (articles in journals, monographs, chapters in books) and mainly concerns social-community psychiatry, psychosocial rehabilitation, the role of the family in mental disorders and the history of psychiatry.
