John Shotter

John Shotter was an Honorary Professor of Communication at the Department of Communication at New Hampshire University and works as a consultant at KCC International (Kensington Consultation Center) in London. Author of many books, including the popular Life through Language (Sage, London, 1993).

Abstract

Based on ideas formulated by Merleau-Ponty, Bakhtin, Wittgenstein, Gadamer along with others, the paper presents the concept of “persons” not as self-contained entities, but in terms of their embedding in a set of dynamic, always changing relations to their surroundings. Meetings as joint, chiasmically structured actions, chiasmic (intertwined) relations, “withness”-being in contrast to “aboutness”-being, and “prospective concepts”, are some of the terms that are presented and discussed here.
