Four Journals tell their story

A very interesting Round Table (What is a Journal, today?) where a good insight into each journal's philosophy, ideology, form and content emerged.

The moderator and discussant was Eleftheria Tseliou.

First is the "historical" Connessioni, with which Metalogos has collaborated since 2019.

Enzo de Bustis, the current director of the CMFT and Massimo Giuliani & Gianluca Ganda (Editors of the journal) talked about its creation in the 1960s as an in-house training newsletter at the Milan Family Therapy Centre, its evolution, its heavy heritage from the Milan Family Therapy School, the difficulties and the eases of its transitions to subsequent phases of publication.

Katia Charalambaki and Nikos Marketos spoke about the journal Systemic Thought and Psychotherapy, the politico-socio-economic contexts and the visions of its creators that decisively influenced its creation (2012) and the course of this online journal of H.E.S.T.A.F.T.A. The title of their speech was Systems Thinking and Psychotherapy – Writing through reflection and dialogue in a context of God's wrath..

Marilena Karamatsouki spoke about the need for alternative writing and description that gave birth (2017) to the online journal Murmurations – Journal of Transformative Systemic Practice. The title of her talk: The use of stories in systemic psychotherapy as a rhizome through the "eyes" of a journal of systemic thinking.

Efrossini Moureli, speaking on "What is a journal today", highlighted the variety, diversity and multilevel form/content of the online journal Metalogos, launched in 2013, linking it to Bahktin's “polyphony” and the "unfinished" and Bateson's two ways of thinking ("loose" and "strict" thinking).

After the Round Table, a Discussion followed.

Eleftheria Tseliou meta-commented on what she had heard from the speakers, developing her own critical thinking. Before giving the floor to the audience, she raised the central questions that were relevant not only to the four journals but, as it later became apparent (since they concern editors, readers, writers, evaluators, therapists and trainers, trainees, institutions, etc.), to all concerned about philosophy, logic, utility, writing/authoring styles - and internationally applicable terms – and about the processes of publishing texts - in general, and specifically in journals:

- What voices are inherent in a journal?

- Which voices are included/which are excluded from it?

- What silent (Derrida) (or silenced) voices are there?

- To whom is the journal addressed?

- How are writers/readers co-constructed within the journal?

- What are the aims, processes, and ways of the journal?

- What is the ideology of the journal?

- What about power relations?

In this rich feedback discussion with the audience, Valeria Pomini, Eleni Boutoulousi, Marilena Karamatsouki, Ioanna Michopoulou, Efrossini Moureli, and Fany Triantafillou participated.
